Tin Ceiling Tiles

You can transform your room by redecorating your 5th wall. Tin ceilings are also called pressed metal ceilings and they are making a comeback in a big way.

They are made from stunningly crafted panels of tin that are stamped to have a decorative motif and then placed in an organized arrangement on a ceiling. You can get a very austere and formal look or a comfy, cozy feel depending on the colors and type of decoration on the tin ceiling tiles that you choose.

The tin is lightweight and will last for decades. It only needs the occasional dusting and it will naturally patina (get that aged greenish look) as time goes by. The tin ceiling tiles are very easy to install and there are two main ways to do it. The tin won't stick to dry wall or plaster so you must either affix a thin sheet of plywood to your ceiling or you can measure your tiles and affix thin stripes of wood that will accommodate the edges of your ceiling tiles - these are called furring strips.

Before installing your ceiling tiles, lay out your pattern on the floor and make sure it looks exactly you want. Then you're ready to install your plywood or furring. Attaching furring or plywood requires only a ladder, a nail gun and a little patience. Measure your ceiling tiles and where ever the edges of the tiles will be, you will need a furring strip to nail the tile to. This is a very fast way to put them up without adding weight to your ceilings.

Tin ceiling tiles look fantastic in any room in your home - if you're tired of the same boring old ceilings - check out the possibility of using ceiling tiles instead.

Update Your Stair Rails

After you have decorated you various rooms in your home and even your ceilings have been updated you might want to consider one more area in your home that could use a little freshening up. Your staircase is one of the most neglected areas in a home and besides painting the rails, most people aren't sure how to update their stairway area.

There are a couple of accents you can add to your stair rails that will update the look of your stairway area. The stairway has two main parts - besides the stairs, the rails and the spindles. The spindles are the strips of wood or metal that are in the middle creating not only a decoration but placed closely together create a safe area on the stairs so children, pets or can't easily fall through the openings in between the spindles.

Unless your stairway was a custom built job most spindles are the same size and a new spindle will usually fit like a glove in the place of your old spindle. For a sturdy and updated look, replace your boring old wooden spindles with updated forged iron. It can be painted to match or accent your existing stairway colors and the delicate scroll work has a very elegant appeal that most people love.

If you're stairs travel over a doorway or you can use the doorway that leads to your stairs, add stair brackets with a delicate scroll work design that matches your spindles for a look that will pull everything together. Adding an accent rug to the area will also bring your decor design together if you pair the colors from your stairway with the room entering the area.

Now that you know the secret - update your stairway!

Daybeds - Purely Functional Beauty

The daybed was once something that was relegated to the guest room and in many homes wound up holding extra clothes, the laundry basket and things no one else wanted to use in the rest of the house.

When company was coming, this room was hurriedly cleaned and the day bed was used for guests. Now, the daybed is becoming the bed of choice in many rooms of teenagers and dorm rooms. In both a teenager's room and a dorm room, space is precious.

A daybed can do dual duty as both a place to sit and study or talk with friends as well as a place to sleep at night. You can get a daybed in nearly any style to match any decor. If you like classic Victorian designs, there is a daybed made for just that style.

A fun make of daybed is the Leaf Scroll Daybed. This daybed is almost a throwback to the chaise lounge styles of the 1940s with it's raised side rails on one end and very low on the other. It comes in a number of great texture options from crackled to distressed to bronzed and it will literally fit into any decor.

If you're looking to get your teenager a functional item for their room that will allow them to have more space or you're decorating a dorm room and finding that space is tight, look at adding a daybed and make the best use of your space.

Go Bistro!

A bistro is a small informal restaurant that also serves wine. You can turn your dining area into a cozy little bistro-like nook with just a few changes.

Bistros originated on the coast of France and quickly spread to Paris. A bistro became a place to gather with friends, drink wine and eat lightly while enjoying rousing conversations. You can add touches of French designs around your room and incorporate it into a bistro look that your friends and family will enjoy gathering in. Light touches with a decidedly French taste include wall clocks, signs, use old French postcards decoratively displayed on the walls and add in a fun old bistro table with a French table cloth.

Plan a fun night with your friends and have a feast of bistro favorites. Start off with amuse-bouche (appetizers). Seafood dishes such as crab cakes, martini prawns, or even oysters on the half shell are great choices. Remember, bistro food is meant to be fast and easy to prepare and casual, no slaving for hours for a formal meal with friends on a bistro night. Make the main course something easy and filling such as Steak au Poivre Vert which is steak with fresh green peppercorn sauce. Have lots of crusty bread and red and white table wines to keep everyone's palate whetted. Make dessert a light and delicious parfait or chocolate mousse.

Even if it is for just one night, turn your dining room into a bistro and enjoy a fun gathering with your favorite group of family and friends - bon appetite!

Touch of an Angel

If you're looking to add a new look to one of your rooms, an angelic touch might be just the change your looking for.

You don't have to add new furniture or a huge number of new items to "angelize" a room. Think light and airy; keep your colors light and your fabrics lightweight and flowing for your window treatments, throws and pillows.

If you already have a sofa that you love, just update it with either an upholstery job in light colored fabrics and then add some pillows covered in a sheer chiffon fabric and if you like, add angel clips or sew angel figurines to the pillow closures. If you have the most basic of sewing skills you can customize your accessories to be uniquely "you".

For your window treatments, use drapery weight fabrics that are both light in color and weight. You can put sheers on the top in an even lighter shade of color that will compliment your decor as a whole.

Other fun angelic additions for your room could be embellished lamp shades or for an even softer mood in lighting, a pair of resin and metal guardian angel candle holders. There are different types of angels you can add to your decorating scheme from chubby cherubs to stately guardians in their flowing robes to the beautiful ethereal winged beauties that grace many artworks and sculptures.

You don't have to all out redecorate your room but rather add a piece or two at a time and you will be able to completely change your room and stay within even the most modest of budgets. Start off with simple candle holders and then add a few more accents. When you're ready for a bigger change, redo your window treatments and sofa covering. Add pillows another weekend.

Soon you can have a room the angels themselves will be delighted to stop by and relax in!
