Bird Baths and Bird Feeders
If you don't have one already, consider putting a birdbath in your yard for spring. They perform a necessary function of giving your wild-feathered friends a cool drink in the hot months and not only will they attract birds, birdbaths will also bring in exotic looking dragonflies and don't be surprised to find the occasional frog testing out the cool waters.
If you have cats that stay indoors, put the birdbath in view of a window seat for them and watch them watch the action. Many cats will start making "ratta-tat-tat" sounds from the sheer excitement of watching the birds splashing, playing and drinking the water. Accent has three designs of birdbath done in wrought iron scrollwork that will add an elegant air to your yard or garden. If you want something even more understatedly elegant, check out the Roman birdbath with its simple column design.
Bird feeders will also supply hours of bird watching fun. There are bird feeders that resemble barns, gazebos, pagodas, pavilions, and lighthouses. The bungalow design is especially functional for anyone who has clever squirrels. With its slanting top, it will prove frustrating to most bushy tailed intruders to the bird feeder.
If you are looking for some great ways to spruce up your garden or yard but you want the pieces to be functional as well, look into adding a birdbath and a bird feeder to your area. They will provide hours of nature watching fun for your and your family as well as good water and food for your feathered friends who will stop by often to entertain you.

Spring Plants for Planters
Spring is upon us and if you don't have time to go til up your yard to make a garden area, a great solution can be the creative placement of planters around your yard.
Not all plants do well in planters but you can make a glorious springtime presentation in your yard if you choose your plants wisely. Whether you choose small, medium, large or extra-large planters, you can make a great display.
In a small planter, put delicate looking violets. For as fragile as they look, they are really quite hardy plants and if you're the type that doesn't remember to water your plants on a regular basis, violets are very forgiving.
If you'd like something a little aromatic, try planting some lavender. It has a delicate scent that attracts hummingbirds in the early morning and late afternoon hours as well as butterflies and bumble bees. Two herbs that make a nice presentation in a planter are Rue and Feverfew. Both will produce a lot of leaves and masses of small delicate flowers.
Wildflowers also look nice in planters. When you buy the mixed packets, you are never sure exactly what you'll get but generally they begin blooming in the mid-to late spring and continue until the late summer. Bulb flowers such as tulips and jonquils do very well in planters and if you live in a cooler climate, they will thrive. In the winter, many people advise to dig up your bulbs and wrap them in dry paper and store them in a cool, dark area like a basement.
If you'd like sheer, lush greenery that you are sure will grow, try one of the many varieties of ivy. They get bushy, they climb and generally are very hardy plants. Best of all, you can move planters any place you like around your yard and they always look fabulous!
