Adding a Pet to Your Family?
If you're feeling like you're about to give in to the ever-present asking of your kids to finally get a dog, make sure you know what you're getting into. If you haven't had a dog in your family in many years or you've never owned a dog, there are a few points you need to consider.
Dogs are social creatures and need companionship. If your family is so wrapped up in work, school and extra-curricular activities, you may not have time for a dog. When dogs get bored, they tend to get destructive and you might wind up thinking that you have a bad dog that misbehaves when you merely have a lonely dog that needs attention. Make sure that your family will have enough time to devote to a dog.
If you honestly look at your budget and see that you have the extra money that will be necessary to spend on the yearly vaccinations and good food a dog needs - you are probably making a good decision to add a dog to your family.
Your kids can learn responsibility by having the job of feeding and watering the dog. Grooming is a great way to form a bond between your dog and yourself. Having a bond with your dog will go miles towards making training much easier.
When you choose to add a dog to your family, make sure he has
his own space to sleep in. Granted he'll wind up in bed with yourself or your kids on many nights but he will also love having a place all his own to curl up and snooze.
